Should Canadian Lawyers Use TikTok to Build Their Personal Brand?
It depends.
If your focus is solely on building a Canadian practice, the answer is no.
Recently, the Canadian government banned TikTok’s operations in Canada due to national security concerns.
However, if you are licensed to practice in countries outside Canada and the U.S., TikTok could still work for you. You can download the app and upload content. Based on my experience in the Canadian legal sector, clients don’t always originate from Canada. This means that even if TikTok is restricted within Canada, it remains a viable platform to engage with audiences and potential clients in other countries.
For example, immigration lawyers may benefit from TikTok, as some of their clients might be based outside Canada. Similarly, estate planning lawyers could attract prospects from abroad who own property in Canada. Building a brand on TikTok can help connect with these potential clients in regions where the platform is widely used.
What About Security Concerns?
Invest in a separate, high-quality smartphone for social media use. Use it only for recording, editing, and publishing content. This reduces risks and ensures the phone is not used for anything other than social media promotion.
Final Thoughts
It’s not a hard no. Whether TikTok works for you depends on your practice area and how many clients come from outside Canada. If most of your business is domestic, delete the app. But if a portion of your clients are international and TikTok is popular in their countries, consider using it.
